AIkido Pharma Announces Inventor and Scientist Dr. Matthew Frieman Joins Scientific Advisory Board

New Board Member Brings More Expertise to AIkido Pharma

PR Newswire

NEW YORK April 26, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — AIkido Pharma Inc. (Nasdaq: AIKI) (“AIkido” or the “Company”) today announced that Dr. Matthew Frieman has joined the Company’s Scientific Advisory Board.

(PRNewsfoto/AIkido Pharma Incorporated)

“Dr. Frieman is a world-class scientist and inventor.  His research is truly cutting edge and his work is advancing the science in this tremendously important field,” commented Mr. Anthony Hayes , CEO of AIkido. “We are honored to have him join our team of advisors and work more directly in our efforts to advance the development his technology, that we previously licensed.  The coronavirus is still a notable issue that continues to impact society and we are very proud to be supporting Dr. Frieman’s work.”

Dr. Frieman is an Associate Professor in The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at The University of Maryland School of Medicine and an internationally recognized virologist with expertise in coronaviruses for which he has studies since 2004.  Specifically, he specializes in the highly pathogenic coronaviruses that include severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) which emerged in 2003, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) which emerged in 2012 and SARS-CoV-2, which emerged in 2019.

Dr. Frieman’s research interests span from basic science into translating those findings to human therapies.  His work on coronavirus replication derives from his interest in studying how the virus interacts with the cellular machinery during infection.  He has identified SARS-CoV-1 and MERS-CoV encoded proteins that alter the host response to infection including proteins that block the innate immune response to allow the virus to replicate silently without the cell sensing that a virus was there.  Some of these viral proteins inhibit the interferon induction and signaling while other reverse the cells proteins that retain coronaviruses at the surface of the cell.  These findings have also been used by Dr. Frieman to identify cellular proteins that interact with the coronavirus proteins to try and block these actions.  He is now developing novel compounds that target the host proteins so that they can counteract the pro-viral function of the coronavirus proteins.  He has shown that this cellular target, the SKI complex, plays a role in many viruses, such that the novel compounds he has identified inhibit SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, Influenza virus, Ebolavirus and Marburg virus.  This work is continuing to identify more potent inhibitors of this complex for use in animal models and eventually humans.

AIkido Granted Sublicense to Technology for Targeted Psilocybin Treatment of Neuro-Inflamed Tissue in Cancer Patients

Technology Includes Central Nervous System Homing Peptides for Drug Delivery

PR Newswire

NEW YORK April 7, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — AIkido Pharma Inc. (Nasdaq: AIKI) (“AIkido” or the “Company”) today announced that it has been granted an exclusive sublicense to technology related to the use of novel and proprietary central nervous system (CNS) homing peptides for the therapeutic treatment of neuroinflammatory disease in cancer patients.

(PRNewsfoto/AIkido Pharma Incorporated)

The homing peptides covered by the sublicense can be used to facilitate the delivery of therapeutic agents to inflamed CNS tissue.  Psychedelics such as psilocybin have been shown to have anti-inflammatory activity in addition to their potential efficacy for treatment of neurological disorders such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  Studies indicate that neuroinflammation of the brain and other CNS tissues in cancer patients contributes to, among other symptoms, the onset of cancer cachexia, which is characterized by loss of appetite, extreme weight loss and muscle wasting.

Anthony Hayes , CEO of AIkido Pharma, stated, “The novel homing peptides covered under this sublicense have the potential to allow the direct delivery of psilocybin to inflamed CNS tissue in cancer patients.  This sublicense culminates our Letter of Intent previously announced on February 16, 2021 .  It complements our recently announced support of the psilocybin research for PTSD treatment at Mount Sinai Center for Psychedelic Psychotherapy and Trauma Research.”

AIkido Pharma Provides Business Update

Well-Capitalized to Further Efforts and Opportunistically Expand Portfolio

Drug Research and Development Progressing

Well-Capitalized to Further Efforts and Opportunistically Expand Portfolio

PR Newswire

NEW YORK April 5, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — AIkido Pharma Inc. (Nasdaq: AIKI) (“AIkido” or the “Company”) today provided a business update.

(PRNewsfoto/AIkido Pharma Incorporated)

Anthony Hayes , CEO of AIkido Pharma, stated, “AIkido’s primary focus is the commercialization of improved treatments for multiple types of cancer and viral infections through innovative research and development that leverages the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Our research partners continue to make progress towards this focus with positive results in ongoing preclinical studies. In addition, through a series of financing transactions over the course of 2020, and the last several months, we are sufficiently capitalized to support our current efforts and to pursue additional emerging opportunities to further broaden our portfolio.”

Drug Research and Development

The Company continues its work to develop therapeutic drug compounds through strong partnerships with prominent educational institutions, including the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Maryland at Baltimore , and is constantly seeking to grow its pipeline of treatments in oncology through additional licensing opportunities. The Company’s business portfolio, which is initially focused on the treatment of cancer and multiple types of viral infections with drug candidates in varying stages of research and development, includes a diverse mix of small-molecule anticancer and antiviral therapeutics.

Most recently, the Company committed to sponsoring psychedelic research at the Mount Sinai Center for Psychedelic Psychotherapy and Trauma Research to help veterans who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related symptoms. The Center will conduct clinical trials to identify biomarkers that predict and correlate with positive treatment outcomes by analyzing blood samples and performing neuroimaging tests before and after therapy. Applications in the treatment of PTSD represent a tremendous opportunity with nearly nine million people in the U.S. struggling with the disorder annually.

The Company’s broad spectrum anti-viral platform has shown progress in optimizing drugs for the treatment of influenza, COVID-19, Ebola and other viral infections. The initial two lead compounds have been optimized using computer assisted learning through two rounds of chemical modifications to achieve drug-like properties required to move the compounds into animal testing. In addition, a third lead compound has been identified and will be subjected to computer assisted optimization. These new compounds are being tested against influenza virus with testing on SARS-CoV-2 expected in the near future. Subsequently, the top analogs from each series of lead compounds will be selected for tests of their anti-viral effects in a SARS-CoV-2 mouse model.

In January of this year, the Company acquired an ownership interest in Convergent Therapeutics, Inc., which has exclusive rights to technology related to next-generation dual-action peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (“PRRT”) for prostate cancer covered by multiple issued U.S. and foreign patents. Convergent is currently conducting advanced human trials relating to prostate cancer treatments utilizing PRRT that targets the prostate-specific membrane antigen (“PSMA”) present on prostate cancer cells. The technology was developed under the direction of Dr. Neil Bander, Professor of Urologic Oncology at Weill Cornell Medicine.  Phase 1 data is projected to be released in Q2 of 2021

Also, after year end, the Company executed an exclusive patent license agreement with Silo Pharma, Inc. (“Silo Pharma”) for technology that covers the use of psilocybin for cancer patients.  Importantly, this license provides the Company with the opportunity to explore an emerging and expanding treatment for neuroinflammation, which is frequently associated with cancer, and other cancer-related neurological side-effects. The technology is covered by four patent applications already on file with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Capital Resources

Subsequent to year end, the Company raised nearly $90 million , before discounts, commissions and estimated expenses, to support its investigative and preclinical work as well as pursue strategic investment opportunities as they arise. As such, the Company is constantly seeking to grow its pipeline of treatments in oncology. With approximately $25 million in cash and cash equivalents at year end and the additional boost from recent offerings, the Company has extended its runway for further investment in drug development. The Company utilized cash from operations in 2020 of just over $4.0 million .

Corporate Governance

The Company reinforced its corporate governance with the appointment of two new independent directors, Mr. Paul LeMire and Mr. Robert Dudley , who each bring extensive executive experience as well as decades of financial expertise in overseeing the Company’s execution of its strategy and financing of operations.

In addition, the Company strengthened its Scientific Advisory Board with the addition of two new advisors, Dr. Scott T. Tagawa , M.D. and Inventor Dr. Neil H. Bander, M.D., who are each widely respected leaders in their respective fields. They bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the Company’s efforts to advance the research and development of commercially viable drug therapies.

AIkido Pharma Sponsors Psychedelic Compound Research to Treat PTSD

PR Newswire

NEW YORK March 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — AIkido Pharma Inc. (Nasdaq: AIKI) (“AIkido” or the “Company”) today announced that it is sponsoring psychedelic research at the Mount Sinai Center for Psychedelic Psychotherapy and Trauma Research (the “Center”). The Center examines the therapeutic potential of psychedelic compounds for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related symptoms.

(PRNewsfoto/AIkido Pharma Incorporated)

Health care for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is reaching a crisis point. Each year, over 8.6 million adults grapple with PTSD, and nearly ten percent of Americans will experience PTSD at some time in their lives. Combat veterans in particular, are at an even greater risk, with an estimated 11-20 percent of veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan having PTSD annually. Over half a million veterans have sought treatment for PTSD in the last few years, some having received treatment for decades.  Currently, no academic institution, other than the Center, is conducting research involving the administration of psychedelics inside the VA System.

The Center works to provide novel clinical therapies utilizing MDMA, psilocybin, and other psychedelics through FDA-approved research protocols.  More specific to the Company’s support, the Center will be embarking on clinical trials with MDMA and psilocybin.  As part of these studies the Center will be collecting blood samples and performing neuroimaging before and after therapy to identify biomarkers that predict and correlate with positive treatment outcome.
