The Truth About Psilocybin and the Brain

Julia Joyes is a neuroscientist and research director at TheraPsil, a leading non profit organization making a difference to mental health in Canada. In this episode, we take a closer look at psilocybin’s impact on the brain.

The first study investigating psilocybin’s impact on children

According to preclinical research conducted by Nova Mentis (NOVA), psilocybin has potential to reduce anxiety in autistic patients and could improve cognitive function in patients with fragile x syndrome (FXS), a genetic condition that causes learning impairments.

Now, the company is forming a joint venture with Mycrodose Therapeutics to accelerate R&D into the treatment. The partnership will use Mycrodose Therapeutics’ patented systems to deliver a self-administered and non-invasive microdose.

The joint venture plans to conduct human clinical trials on a broad range of patients with FXS and autism, including pediatric patients. This will be the first study investigating psilocybin’s impact on children.

Group psychedelic therapy cures depression!

On Tuesday, Compass Pathways (CMPS) received a US patent for COMP360, its proprietary formulation of crystalline psilocybin. On Wednesday, the company announced positive findings from an open-label study using the formulation to treat depression in cancer patients.

Thirty patients were administered COMP360 in group therapy sessions of two to four people. Twenty-four people experienced at least a 50% reduction in depression symptoms within three weeks of treatment, which was sustained at week eight, and fifteen people were in total remission from depression.

The average depression score dropped from 25.9 to just 6.8!

The company notes that the study was not blinded or placebo-controlled, so the findings are subject to expectancy bias, but the results show promise that both COMP360 and group therapy models are effective.

Trip your way to a healthier lifestyle

Psychedelics improve mental health, but can that translate into better physical health too?

A recent study found that people who have tried psychedelics at least once in their life had a 23% lower chance of heart disease and a 12% lower chance of diabetes in the past year.

Other research indicates that psychedelic use is tied to healthier lifestyle choices such as increased exercise, reduced smoking and alcohol consumption, and a balanced diet.

Researchers also theorize that psychedelics could stimulate brain receptors that are linked to both mental and cardiometabolic health.

DMT receives innovative medicine designation

DMT-assisted therapy could be approved in the UK sooner than expected!

Yesterday, Small Pharma (DMT) received an Innovation Passport Designation for its DMT-assisted therapy program for depression – a status given to promising medicines to expedite development. The passport gives the company access to the Innovative Licensing and Access Pathway (ILAP) to reduce time to market and facilitate patient access to the treatment.

The designation is essentially the UK’s version of a Breakthrough Therapy Designation, which the FDA granted to Compass Pathways (CMPS) and Usona Institute in 2018 and 2019, respectively, for their psilocybin-assisted therapy programs.

Small Pharma also launched a Phase 2a clinical trial for DMT-assisted therapy on Tuesday and began trading on the OTCQB market on Wednesday under the symbol “DMTTF”.

Be an early investor 🤑

Want to be an early investor in a psychedelics company? Now’s your chance!

Ei.Ventures is currently looking to raise $50M through a Regulation A+ Framework – a type of offering that allows the general public, not just institutional or accredited investors, to buy shares in a company before it goes public.

“I’m really passionate about democratizing investment opportunities so any investor can reap the rewards, and take all of the risks of early investment in game-changing companies,” said David Nikzad, the company’s founder, who was an early investor in Airbnb , Betterment, and Vidyard.

Ei.Ventures is developing a transdermal psilocybin patch and is preparing to launch a functional mushroom line early next year. Shares are selling for $4.94 each with a minimum purchase of 101 shares, and the company has already raised $20M. Take advantage of the offer here.

The world’s biggest psychedelic therapy provider

Field Trip Health (FTRP) just got one step closer to reaching its goal of running 75 psychedelic therapy clinics by 2024.

The company opened three new treatment centers in Seattle, Vancouver and Fredericton. It now administers ketamine-assisted therapy at eight clinics across North America and one in Amsterdam.

The treatment is proving to be effective with clients’ depression scores dropping from an average of 17 (severe) to 6 (mild) and benefits lasting at least 120 days.

74 studies on 50 compounds 🤯

This week, Cybin Inc. (CYBN) completed its 74th preclinical study to advance its proprietary molecules, CYB003 and CYB004, toward clinical research.

The company has evaluated 50 novel compounds in its preclinical research, narrowing it down to four lead candidates. including CYB003 for alcohol use disorder and CYB004 for anxiety disorders.

Compared to classic psychedelics, the formulations are showing:

  • Faster onset times
  • Shorter durations
  • High oral bioavailability
  • Significant brain penetration, and
  • Less variability between subjects

Human clinical trials are expected to begin early next year to work toward an Investigational New Drug (IND) status.

Psychedelic farmer’s markets coming to Cali!

Oakland could legalize the sale of psychedelics as early as next year!

The city decriminalized the use and cultivation of many psychedelics back in 2019, and now, activists are building on their progress with a “Go Local” Legislative Initiative. The initiative would create a community-based model to allow people to legally purchase natural psychedelics like psilocybin and ayahuasca from local producers.

The initiative will gather research on how best to implement the model over the next year and will introduce a legislation in the summer of 2022.

Some possible reforms being considered include allowing commercial agriculture in residential zones, creating “sacred plant adult farmer’s market permits,” and allowing cannabis dispensaries with 100% local ownership to sell entheogens, among many others.

All products would have to be grown, produced, and tested locally.

Another unanimous win 🎉

After yet another unanimous vote, Easthampton became the fourth city in Massachusetts to decriminalize possession and cultivation of psychedelics!

Will this European island legalize shrooms?

Malta may legalize cannabis, but residents don’t want the reforms to stop there.

In a recent survey, 447 people in Malta were asked if they think the country should legalize any other substances beyond cannabis. Magic mushrooms was the most popular response with 45% in favour of its legalization.

LSD was the next most common response at 27%, but 56% did not see a need for any other drugs to be legalized.

Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine Publishes New COVID-19 Suicide Research Led by Braxia Scientific CEO Dr. Roger McIntyre

  • Findings Underscore Company Core Objectives to Develop Ketamine Derivatives as Additional Measures to Further Reduce Suicidality

TORONTO, ONTARIO October 21, 2021 – Braxia Scientific Corp. (“Braxia”, or the “Company”), (CSE: BRAX) (OTC: BRAXF) (FWB: 496), a medical research company with clinics providing innovative ketamine treatments for persons with depression and related disorders, is pleased to announce the publication of a new study led by Braxia Scientific CEO Dr. Roger McIntyre in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.

The publication, entitled “Suicide reduction in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic: lessons informing national prevention strategies for suicide reduction” was initiated to evaluate the impact of federal, public health and social support programs on national suicide rates in Canada, which were put in place to mitigate the abrupt changes to social and financial provisions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Reducing the rate of suicide rates is one of Braxia Scientific’s core objectives and should be a national imperative in Canada and globally,” said Dr. McIntyre. “The findings presented in this research should be used to inform public policy and develop strategies for decreasing suicide rates in Canada.”

The overall suicide mortality rate decreased in Canada from 10.82 deaths per 100,000 in March 2019 – February 2020 (i.e., 4,090 suicide deaths in a population of 37,802,043) to 7.34 per 100,000 (i.e., 2,790 deaths in a population of 38,008,005) in March 2020 – February 2021, an absolute difference of 1,300 suicide deaths. Meanwhile, the Canadian unemployment rate had changed from an average monthly rate of 5.7% in 2019 to 9.5% in 2020. Although the data are provisional, they represent a promising trend.

Coinciding with the reduced rate of suicide in Canada, during the time of observation, there was an increase in the availability of virtual psychiatric healthcare, including but not limited to psychotherapy and counselling service.

“In addition to public policies that prioritize psychiatric services generally, especially for persons at risk for suicide, we believe that we can reduce the rate of suicide even further through the innovative Ketamine treatments we are providing today and through new potential derivatives in the future” added Dr. McIntyre.

“With the current and upcoming clinical trials at Braxia Scientific centers, we are working hard to investigate the effects and potential of psychedelics like ketamine and psilocybin as therapies for treatment-resistant depression and other brain-based disorders that are associated with suicide.”

In addition, the results of the study suggest that government interventions that broadly aim to reduce measures of insecurity (such as those relating to finances, housing and health) and provide timely psychiatric services, should be prioritized as part of a national suicide reduction strategy, not only during but after termination of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The full text of the study can be found here.

Reborn documents Odom’s journey to break patterns of addiction through medically guided alternative treatments for depression and drug dependency, including meditation, the plant medicine ibogaine, and the administration of medical ketamine.

Zappy Zapolin is the co-founder and executive chairman of KetaMD, a developing telemedicine platform that provides at-home medical ketamine treatments. He is also an award-winning filmmaker dedicated to the expansion of human consciousness and has been described as the “psychedelic concierge to the stars” for helping celebrities and business icons achieve a conscious transformation.

I look forward to continuing to educate the masses on how it can be used safely in a clinical setting to change lives.”

“It will be an honor to share the stage and discuss the potential benefits of ketamine with Zappy and Lamar, who are superstars of the psychedelic and athletic fields, respectively,” said Dr. McIntyre. “While we each arrived at this point from various avenues, we all have the same destination, and that is to drastically lower suicide rates and provide rapid, significant relief to those suffering from depression and other brain disorders.”

Braxia Scientific Reports Encouraging Results of Ketamine Study Showing Significant Reduction in Depressive Symptoms and Suicidality with Ketamine as a Solo Treatment

Braxia Scientific Reports Encouraging Results of Ketamine Study Showing Significant Reduction in Depressive Symptoms and Suicidality with Ketamine as a Solo Treatment

TORONTO, ONTARIO Sept. 30, 2021 – Braxia Scientific Corp. (“Braxia”, or the “Company”), (CSE: BRAX) (OTC: BRAXF) (FWB: 496), a medical research company with clinics providing innovative ketamine treatments for persons with depression and related disorders, is pleased to report encouraging preliminary findings of a recent clinical study that suggests ketamine may be as effective as a standalone antidepressant, versus as an adjunctive therapy.
The study, which was conducted at the Canadian Rapid Treatment Centre of Excellence (CRTCE), a wholly owned Braxia subsidiary, showed comparable clinical benefits (e.g., antidepressant effects and reduction in suicidal thoughts) in a large sample of 220 patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) who received intravenous (IV) ketamine infusions as a monotherapy, as compared with those receiving IV ketamine in addition to oral antidepressants.

Following the study protocols, participants in the ketamine monotherapy group achieved response and remission rates of 39.1% and 17.4%, respectively. Meanwhile, those receiving ketamine treatment adjunct to antidepressants, saw corresponding rates of 21.9% and 6.7%.

“We continue to inform and refine treatment protocols on the implementation of ketamine for individuals with TRD,” said Dr. Roger McIntyre, CEO, Braxia Scientific.“In many circumstances, persons who safely benefited from ketamine treatment were able to discontinue their ineffective conventional treatments and transition entirely to ketamine monotherapy. Additionally, this data further informs Braxia Scientific’s drug discovery and development, especially as it relates to the appropriate patient selection and enrolment for our clinical research studies.”

“Ketamine has been shown to provide rapid and significant antidepressant effects in individuals with unipolar and bipolar TRD, and can also rapidly reduce suicidal thoughts” said Dr. Joshua Rosenblat, Braxia Scientific’s Chief Medical and Scientific Officer. “While these findings are preliminary, they support the idea that ketamine is a highly effective rapid-acting antidepressant treatment approach as evidenced by its ability to improve depression as a monotherapy. This data is particularly important, because it shows that the benefits of ketamine may not be dependent on the co-prescription of other medications.”

According to the study, “Ketamine has been almost exclusively studied as an antidepressant adjunct to other antidepressants. Due to the dearth of high-quality clinical data on the safety and efficacy of ketamine as an antidepressant monotherapy, the majority of clinicians continue to prescribe ketamine to patients with the condition that they remain on a stable dose of one or more antidepressant drugs for the duration of treatment.”

Dr. Rosenblat added, “The study provides real world evidence, from a large sample of persons treatment-seeking for TRD, that further advances the science and substantiates our research that ketamine is a safe, effective and rapid-acting treatment for depression, suicidality and other brain-based disorders.”

Braxia Scientific Reports First Quarter 2022 Financial Results; Company Achieves 80% Revenue Growth from Expanding Clinic Patient Base

Braxia Scientific Reports First Quarter 2022 Financial Results; Company Achieves 80% Revenue Growth from Expanding Clinic Patient Base

  • Revenue from four Canadian clinics increased 80.3% to $407,075 year-over-year
  • Exceeding monthly IV Ketamine infusion targets, ramping up infusions at new Montreal clinic
  • Advancing three funded clinical trials through Braxia Scientific’s network of clinics, including a Ketamine trial for Bipolar Depression, a Ketamine trial to rapidly reduce suicidality, and the first multiple-dose psilocybin trial to combat treatment-resistant depression

TORONTO, ONTARIO Aug. 30, 2021 – Braxia Scientific Corp. (“Braxia Scientific,” or the “Company”), (CSE: BRAX) (OTC: BRAXF) (FWB: 496), a medical research company with clinics providing innovative ketamine treatments for persons with depression and related disorders, today announced the filing of its fiscal first-quarter results for the three-month period ending June 30, 2021. Complete financial statements along with related management discussion and analysis can be found in the System for Electronic Document Analysis and Retrieval (SEDAR), the electronic filing system for the disclosure documents of issuers across Canada, at www.SEDAR.com.

With its leading researchers and experienced implementation team, Braxia Scientific continues to focus on its three strategic priorities: (i) expand its footprint of multidisciplinary clinics providing IV Ketamine for mental health disorders, (ii) identify new, IP-capable ketamine and psychedelic derivatives, as well as novel delivery systems, and to capitalize on new formulations by implementing them within Braxia Health’s clinical settings, and (iii) train new clinicians through the Braxia Institute to administer psychedelic-assisted therapy based on the International Guidelines published by Braxia Scientific Leadership.

Through its vertically integrated model, Braxia Scientific is differentiated by way of its capability to achieve a shortened research and development timeline that, along with the track record and relationships already established by the Company’s leadership, will enable partnerships with large pharmaceutical companies.

“As one of very few clinics offering IV Ketamine therapy in Canada since 2018, and the first private IV Ketamine clinic in Quebec, we have set the standard in care through our protocols and team of psychiatrists and nurses. As a result, we are pleased to be accepting an increasing number of referrals for patients with depression in need of rapid-acting and effective treatments,” said Dr. Roger McIntyre, CEO of Braxia Scientific.

“In addition to our clinics, we are executing on our strategy to test out innovative formulations and delivery methods. We are working to achieve key milestone objectives such as demonstrating the proof of mechanism, and that they actually affect the brain and attenuate depression – which has a one- to two-year runway.”

“We are in discussions with major drug manufacturers as to how we can move the needle for ketamine and psychedelic derivatives, with a view to refining our therapeutic research priorities in developing new products that could be ultimately acquired by large pharma.”

Recent Operational Highlights

Increasing Patient Volume: Braxia Scientific, through its four multidisciplinary, community-based Canadian clinics, operating as Braxia Health, continued to see increased patient volume, exceeding its IV ketamine infusion targets every month since January 2021. These results partially reflect increased treatments from its newest clinic in Montreal, which has ramped up operations since the Company, in conjunction with its joint venture partner, Neurotherapy Montreal, successfully opened March 31, 2021. This new location, which is the first to offer novel Ketamine therapy, including intravenous therapy, to patients in a private clinical setting in Quebec, required eight (8) weeks, from initial resource deployment to the first patient visit, to become operational, including all necessary education and training.

Braxia Health’s clinical operations also benefited from several other key accomplishments in the quarter. The Company successfully brought on several more psychiatrists, nurses, family doctors and an anesthesiologist; optimized the clinical intake process with new software, allowing doctors to see more patients and provide better care; established direct billing practices with a major Canadian health insurer; and increased marketing initiatives and engagement with psychiatrists across Ontario about Braxia Health clinics and offerings.

Funded Clinical Trials, Leading Research and Development: Supported by its network of clinics, Braxia Scientific’s world-leading scientific research team is advancing multiple research and development studies and conducting clinical trials with IV Ketamine, Ketamine derivatives and other psychedelic drugs.

In August 2021, the Company announced it would commence a landmark clinical trial to conduct Canada’s first multiple-dose psilocybin study for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Whereas most other TRD studies limit participation to patients that have not found relief from a maximum of five other potential remedies, Braxia Scientific’s research will not have an upper limit, and will even include patients that have endured dozens of unsuccessful medical trials, including ketamine and electroconvulsive therapy.

The Company is confident that the study will demonstrate that the Company can effectively conduct a randomized controlled trial using psychedelic-assisted therapy. This will enable the Company to build the infrastructure for future studies and future clinical care, while also compiling efficacy data and providing the opportunity to evaluate the therapist training program launched at the end of June 2021.

This program run by the Braxia Institute, the Company’s training centre focused on advancing psychiatric clinical practice and health services of ketamine and psychedelic treatment therapy, has already cultivated a multi-disciplinary group of 20 therapists from diverse psychiatry and psychotherapy backgrounds to implement safe and effective psilocybin-assisted therapy for patients with depression.

In June 2021, the Company announced that Chief Medical and Scientific Officer Dr. Joshua Rosenblat will initiate a first-of-its-kind ketamine clinical trial to treat bipolar depression. The fully funded study represents the largest registered trial of its kind in the world, and will investigate the use, safety and efficacy of repeated doses of IV ketamine in patients with bipolar depression. This trial will enable Braxia-led research teams to further advance studies of IV ketamine to support its approval as a safe, effective and rapid-acting alternative treatment for patients with bipolar depression.

Braxia Scientific Researchers Leading Innovation and Education

Braxia Scientific’s research and development team continued to execute on several research initiatives during the quarter, achieving several key milestones, including completing a study evaluating genetic predictors of how patients may respond to ketamine, as well as continuing to develop a new topical ketamine formulation and intranasal ketamine product.

The Company was pleased to announce the publication of the International Expert Opinion and Implementation Guidance (the “Guidelines”) for the clinical use of rapid-acting Ketamine and Esketamine for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) in the American Journal of Psychiatry. The Guidelines were developed by Dr. McIntyre and Dr. Rosenblat, along with an international group of 26 medical experts across five continents, establishing Braxia Scientific as an international leader in the rapidly evolving industry of Ketamine, Esketamine and rapid-acting antidepressants.

The Company also launched the Braxia Institute, a training centre focused on advancing psychiatric clinical practice and health services of ketamine and psychedelic treatment therapy for people with treatment-resistant depression and other possible mental health disorders. Through its research-backed training programs, the Braxia Institute is focused on advancing the knowledge base of psychiatrists, physicians and other health-care professionals globally, closing the extraordinary gap between clinical practice groups around the world and the protocols, competencies and best practices identified through peer-reviewed published research.

The Braxia Institute opened enrollment to develop, train, and support a new generation of qualified, independent medical physicians, psychologists, and psychotherapists to implement safe and effective psilocybin-assisted therapy for patients with depression. The therapists will participate in the provision of psychotherapy in upcoming clinical trials at Braxia Health clinics, evaluating the safety and efficacy of psilocybin in treating depression. The Company anticipates that, pending regulatory approval of psilocybin, therapists would also be trained to implement psychedelics in clinical practice.

First Quarter Financial Summary

The Company recorded strong revenues of $407,075 and a gross margin of $114,253 for the first fiscal quarter ended June 30, 2021 reflecting annual increases of 80.3% and 89.7%, respectively, from the results for the first fiscal quarter ended June 30, 2020.

Revenues consisted primarily of sales revenue from the administering of ketamine infusion treatments at the CRTCE clinics in Ontario and Quebec.

As a percentage of total revenue, gross margin was approximately 28.1%, an increase of 139 basis points, when compared with the previous year’s corresponding period.

The Company recorded a net loss for the quarter of $1,091,568, including a non-cash share-based compensation expense of $294,758.

Balance Sheet

The Company’s cash and cash equivalents as of June 30, 2021, was $10,257,759, compared with $11,101,005 as at March 31, 2021.

Looking Ahead

“Braxia Scientific remains steadfastly focused on addressing the public health imperative to identify scalable solutions for attenuating depression and other brain-based disorders to improve the health and well-being of Canadians and people around the world,” said Dr. McIntyre.

“We believe the federal funding received by our senior team members speaks to our superior human capital, as well as our personnel’s long, successful track record of quality research and development. As we seek to expand our network of clinics, particularly into the United States, we look forward to implementing their findings, carrying out several clinical trials, the majority of which will be funded by third parties.”
