The Diaries of a Psychedelic Exec : Episode 06

Hi, I am Neil Maresky, the new CEO of Psyence.

I am delighted to be able to make a contribution to the “Diary of a Psychedelic Exec”. In this episode I reflect on the challenges society is facing when it comes to mental health and why I think psychedelics, and Psyence in particular, have an important role to play in addressing these challenges. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to lead an incredible team at Psyence, all of whom are clearly committed to making an impact on society.

I look forward to contributing to this diary again and for the rest of my knowledgeable team to begin sharing their insights with you in the coming episodes.

Why Natural Psilocybin?

Psyence is advancing the extraordinary therapeutic potential of natural psilocybin. We are doing this because we believe that natural psilocybin offers multiple benefits for the long-term treatment of mental health conditions that may result from trauma. Plant-based and natural remedies are our preferred route as conscious consumers increasingly seek more natural treatments when it comes to supporting their mental wellbeing.

Across the globe research institutions are exploring the potential of psilocybin for therapeutic use, and to treat a variety of mental health conditions. Psilocybin, the psychoactive component of magic mushroom, has shown to have long-lasting medical and spiritual benefits, in comparison to other psychedelic drugs.

Further, what makes psilocybin-based treatments appealing is their rapid and sustained effect. Psilocybin is also reported to have fewer unpleasant side effects than those often associated with more widely prescribed traditional SSRI antidepressants.

According to John Hopkins neuropharmacologist Roland Griffiths who leads the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins Medicine, what makes psilocybin different to other mood-altering pharmaceuticals it is “the enduring meaning and belief changes that can occur. People feel ‘reorganized’ in a way they don’t with other drugs…it’s almost like reprogramming the operating system of a computer.” Griffiths was the lead author of a 2006 study, which demonstrated Psilocybin’s helpfulness for treating a variety of mental health disorders, as well as a more recent study on depression.

At our federally licensed facility in Lesotho we are extracting psilocybin from dried mushrooms for use for research and development purposes at research centres and universities. By extracting from mushrooms we are able to extract the other component alkaloids; which we believe provides an entourage effect, which potentially boosts the benefit of the psilocybin. Psilocybin mushrooms contain a variety of alkaloids, including psilocin, norpsilocin and in some cases may have baeocystin, norbaeocystin and aeruginascin.

Psyence believes in the power of nature and is excited about the positive impact psilocybin based-therapies may offer for those suffering from mental health conditions, often a result of trauma.

The Diaries of a Psychedelic Exec | Episode 5

It was another exciting week at Psyence as we welcomed Dr. Neil Maresky as Chief Executive Officer of Psyence Group. Based in Canada, Neil brings over twenty years of biopharmaceutical experience to Psyence; he was previously at AstraZeneca. I am now the Executive Chairman of Psyence Group and will work closely with Neil on all aspects of the business going forward. I am also delighted to share news of our partnership agreement with Clerkenwell Health; a leading psychedelic Contract Research Organisation based in the United Kingdom.

This is a significant milestone for Psyence Therapeutics as it signals the start of our drug development process. The next step is to commence our engagement with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority in order to get approval to commence our clinical trial in the context of palliative care.

Psyence Group and UK Psychedelic CRO Partners to Conduct UK Palliative Care Clinical Trial

TORONTO, ON: July , 2021 – Psyence Group Inc. (CSE: PSYG) (“Psyence” or the “Company”), a life science biotechnology company pioneering the use of natural psychedelics in mental health and well-being, is pleased to announce it has signed a partnership agreement with Clerkenwell Health (“Clerkenwell”). Clerkenwell is a leading psychedelic Contract Research Organisation (CRO) based in the United Kingdom.

Psyence is developing market leading clinical trials in the field of palliative care and has partnered with Clerkenwell, which will be responsible for jointly designing and delivering the UK clinical trial. Palliative care is the treatment and alleviation of suffering for those facing a serious acute or persistent medical issue, whether the prognosis is deemed terminal or chronic and ongoing. European Director Xan Morgan, based in the United Kingdom, will work closely with Clerkenwell to ensure the successful delivery of the project.

Psyence’s palliative care clinical trials are being designed by Dr. Dingle Spence, a Palliative Care Specialist and Psyence’s Medical Advisor. “There is an historic opportunity for psychedelics such as psilocybin to play a significant role in Palliative Care. We are interested in helping alleviate the many symptoms and conditions experienced by people dealing with serious illness including anxiety and depression, existential distress, quality of life concerns, and issues around grief and bereavement, using a Palliative Care lens that will provide a more holistic approach to their therapy,” says Dr. Spence.

Psyence recently strengthened its executive team with the appointment of biopharmaceutical stalwart Dr Neil Maresky, M.B, B.Ch. as Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Maresky has been instrumental in the launch, commercialization, and uptake of many ground-breaking medical innovations in North America.

As we embark on our journey to commence a clinical trial we are excited to see the promising results from other early-stage clinical trials, which show the efficacy of psychedelic therapies across a multitude of mental health conditions,” says Dr Maresky, “Clerkenwell’s expertise, depth of knowledge and progressive thinking made them the ideal partner to collaborate with.”

The United Kingdom is increasingly becoming a destination for medical psychedelic trials and a number of listed companies have successfully established and completed their Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials in the market. However, these companies have typically focused their research on synthetic compounds, while Psyence’s trial will use natural psilocybin produced at our federally licensed facility in Lesotho in Southern Africa,” Maresky says.

Psyence’s federally licensed commercial psilocybin cultivation and production facility produces certified, high-quality psilocybin yielding mushrooms for research and development purposes for research centres and universities. Designed and constructed to The British Standards Institute (BSI) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, the facility is equipped with specialised equipment to ensure optimum growing conditions and efficient harvesting and packaging.

“Having designed our own trial examining different doses of psilocybin and digitally-supported therapy for the treatment of depression, we are delighted to draw on our experience and provide advisory and operational support to Psyence. We will help them establish the procedures and protocols required to successfully run a clinical trial in order to gain regulatory approval for their products,” says CEO of Clerkenwell Health, Tom McDonald.

Psyence will apply for the necessary approvals in order to commence its clinical trial. The trial will be conducted in the United Kingdom and will be aligned with European, Canadian and US clinical trial guidelines.

This week we are hard at work forging partnerships to bring our products to market. As you know, we have signed an agreement with the Scientific Research Council in Jamaica and we are finalising our plans to export our psilocybin mushrooms to our extraction partners in Canada.

Medicinal Mushrooms Of The Tsitsikamma Forest

Getting out in nature is good for the mind and soul. Recently, one of the Psyence team embarked on a multi-day hike through the magnificent Tsitsikamma forest. This protected indigenous forest is the jewel of South Africa’s Garden Route, second only in popularity among foreign tourists to the Kruger National Park. It is also home to an incredible array of mushroom species.

Walking in the cool shade of the incredible ancient yellowwood and stinkwood trees, brushing past spectacular ferns, whilst hearing the calls of the Knysna Turacos was incredibly uplifting. It is impossible not to become entranced with the many incredible species of fungi that covered the dead tree trunks that lay across the forest floor. From football-sized yellow and black mushrooms to bright red lichens, there was so much to discover.
The role these mushrooms play in this incredibly diverse ecosystem is paramount. Mushrooms break down plant and animal material so that it can be assimilated by the roots of plants and recycled back into the living world. Their presence in every nook and cranny was a sign that all was well in this forest paradise.

But as we now know, mushrooms don’t just help to break up matter. Their medicinal benefits have long been recognised by many cultures. After the hike came to an end, Psyence’s resident mycologist eagerly poured over photos from the adventure, helping identify the mushroom species seen, it was particularly exhilarating to discover that at least three of these mushrooms are known for their healing properties.

Here is what we learnt about them:

Trametes cinnabarina | Psyence | Mushrooms

Trametes cinnabarina is a common ‘’bracket’’ fungi in Southern Africa. As its Latin name suggests it is cinnamon (cannabarina) coloured but can be bright orange or even a whitish orange. It loves hard woods and is saprophytic. Trametes cinnabarina has the common name Tropical Cinnabar Bracket and it can be found in most Tropical-Neotropical habits throughout the Southern Hemisphere. This mushroom is considered medicinal in many cultures.

Trametes versicolor | Psyence | Mushrooms

Trametes versicolor comes in many colour variations. Known as the Turkey Tail, it can be identified by its graphite coloured zonate rings and small uniform pores underneath. Trametes versicolor can be found in several colours even in the same forest and is highly sort after by people who collect wild medicinal plants. It is an immune booster and has anti-carcinogenic effect on tumour growth. This mushroom is cultivated for its medicinal value and has been utilised by the Chinese for thousands of years.

Trametes hirsuta | Psyence | Mushrooms

Trametes hirsuta is commonly known as The Hairy Bracket. It is very similar to Trametes versicolor but has no graphite zonate rings, different pores that are irregular, larger and rougher to feel than the Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor). They have the same medicinal properties of the Turkey Tail in that they are anti carcinogenic and immune boosting but not to the same extent as the Turkey Tail. This species is the most common of the Trametes genus in Neotropical climates because it is not a fussy wood consumer.

World Psychedelics Day 2021

On 20 June 2021 we celebrate the inaugural World Psychedelic Day. This day has been set aside to recognise a new era of rational and informed perspectives on modern day psychedelics and traditional psychoactive plant medicines.
To mark this day, we asked some of our team why they believe in the healing power of psychedelics and natural plant-based medicine.

The Diaries of a Psychedelic CEO : Episode 3

I am a strong believer that in business, one always has to mitigate risk. Yes, we are focusing on psilocybin and doing some incredibly exciting work in this space, but parallel to this we are also building a business in mental health and mental wellness. This week’s episode focuses on where we are in terms of launching our wellness products.

I am pleased about the formation of our Jamaican subsidiary, and I look forward to making some exciting announcements about our commitment to Jamaica and the partnerships we are building. I share my views on why I would rather update you directly than spend shareholder money on marketing our company. As I have always said, I am a custodian of shareholder’s money and I intend to use that investment to build a business, not to push up our stock price through promoting.
