Update marks the first MDMA-assisted therapy session at a Numinus clinic
VANCOUVER, BC, March 30, 2022 /CNW/ – Numinus Wellness Inc. (“Numinus” or the “Company”) (TSX: NUMI) (OTCQX: NUMIF), a mental healthcare company advancing innovative treatments and safe, evidence-based psychedelic-assisted therapies, is pleased to announce that it has advanced to the next implementation phase in the clinical trial “A multi-site open-label extension study of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD (MAPPUSX)” sponsored by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) and organized by MAPS Public Benefit Corporation (MAPS PBC), by enrolling and dosing the first clinical trial volunteer in Canada.
Numinus hosts the Canadian sites for MAPPUSX, through two purpose-designed clinics located in Montreal and Vancouver. This week, the Montreal site began drug administration, led by trial co-therapists Dr. Joe Flanders, VP Psychology, Numinus, and Dr. Emma Hapke, Staff Psychiatrist, University Health Network and Principal Investigator for the MAPS-sponsored trial. The treatment follows MAPS’ protocol of three sessions of MDMA administration and therapy, each to be followed by three integration sessions. The full program is expected to complete in mid-summer 2022.

MAPPUSX is an extension of MAPS’ Phase 3 studies to investigate the safety and efficacy of MDMA-assisted therapy for treating severe PTSD. The MAPPUSX trial is open to those participants from the Phase 3 studies who received the placebo drug and therapy and those who could not receive treatment due to COVID restrictions. The resulting safety data will be provided to regulatory bodies in the sponsor’s New Drug Application.

Federal Containment Level 2 license will support testing and validation for studies and sale of natural products

(“Numinus” or the “Company”) (TSX: NUMI) (OTCQX: NUMIF), a mental healthcare company advancing innovative treatments and safe, evidence-based psychedelic-assisted therapies, is pleased to announce that its research lab, Numinus Bioscience, has been approved by the Public Health Agency of Canada for a Containment Level 2 (CL2) pathogens and toxins license, following upgrading of the facility. The addition will contribute novel data on natural psychedelics, presenting additional IP opportunities and another revenue driver through contract research services.
With the license, Numinus Bioscience will begin the following:
1)
Study of pathogens and bacterial, fungal and microbial contaminants to identify baseline markers and optimal growth environments for Psilocybe mushrooms;
2)
Bioassay studies using mammalian cell lines, to analyze the bioactivity of different whole mushroom formulations that contain both psilocybin and other psychedelic compounds;
3)
Pharmacokinetic (PK) and pre-clinical studies using analysis of blood and other bodily fluids, to investigate reactions in the human body to whole mushrooms and other natural formulations.
“This biosecurity expansion will allow us to deeply understand not only the mechanisms behind Psilocybe mushrooms and other naturally occurring psychedelic materials but also their interaction with the human body,” said Sharan Sidhu, Science Officer and General Manager, Numinus Bioscience. “By performing testing and validation at a highly precise level, we will advance both our own IP development of finished products and scaled production processes, as well as contract services and sale of materials to research and industry partners.”
The license is in addition to Numinus Bioscience’s existing Controlled Drugs and Substances Dealer’s License from Health Canada and underscores Numinus’ long-term strategy of establishing a center of excellence for natural psychedelic research, including extensive license amendments and investment into state-of-the-art equipment such as the Orbitrap, which identifies metabolites in the body and will play a key role in the PK and pre-clinical studies.

Mr. Pechenik is a registered patent attorney and the founder of Calyx Law, an industry-leading law firm specialized in IP relating to cannabis and psychedelics. Mr. Pechenik has a BS from UC San Diego, choosing Cognitive Neuroscience and Biochemistry majors after his first psychedelic experiences inspired deep curiosity about the bases for changes in consciousness; and a JD from New York University, where he initially pursued interests in bioethics and cognitive liberty. Dr. Paul Spagnuolo (PhD) – Associate Professor, University of Guelph
Dr. Spagnuolo is an associate professor at the University of Guelph and past assistant professor at the University of Waterloo, specialized and award-winning in the development of nutraceuticals as novel therapeutics using cellular biology. He is a past member of the Natural Health Products Research Society of Canada and has received funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Dr. Spagnuolo’s research focuses on understanding the therapeutic potential of nutraceuticals (i.e. foods that provide medical or health benefits) and has included investigation of anti-cancer effects in certain compounds. Dr. Harris also heads a graduate research community that undertakes special interest projects, operating out of UOttawa and supported by NSERC, Mitacs and the Province of Ontario.

The new Bioscience Advisory Board will contribute strategically to advancing Numinus’ IP strategy, including product development and clinical trial activities out of the Company’s Health Canada-licensed research facility, Numinus Bioscience. It joins Numinus’ existing General and Clinical advisory boards, comprised of leading industry and subject-matter experts who have been selected to support corporate and therapeutic protocol development. CCrest Laboratories is donating psilocybin truffles so patients in need can access the medicine for free through Canada’s Special Access Program (SAP).
The company was just approved as a licensed psilocybin producer by Health Canada, along with Numinus Wellness (NUMI) and Filament Health’s (FH) Psilo Scientific, allowing them to supply psilocybin for clinical trials and emergency treatments through the SAP.
The truffles will be grown by Red Light Holland (TRUFF) and tested at CCrest Labs before being donated as part of their “compassionate need and free supply” approach.
