Group therapy cures depression in half of cancer patients!

Open-label study of COMP360 psilocybin therapy for depression in cancer patients demonstrates feasibility of simultaneous psilocybin administration in small groups

On Tuesday, Compass Pathways (CMPS) received a US patent for COMP360, its proprietary formulation of crystalline psilocybin. On Wednesday, the company announced positive findings from an open-label study using the formulation to treat depression in cancer patients.

Thirty patients were administered COMP360 in group therapy sessions of two to four people. Twenty four people experienced at least a 50% reduction in depression symptoms within three weeks of treatment, which was sustained at week eight, and fifteen people were in total remission from depression. The average depression score dropped from 25.9 to just 6.8.

The company notes that the study was not blinded or placebo-controlled, so the findings are subject to expectancy bias, but the results show promise that both COMP360 and group therapy models are effective.

Blackhawk Growth’s MindBio Therapeutics Signs Collaboration Agreement With Digital Mind Technology Technology

Blackhawk Growth’s MindBio Therapeutics Signs Collaboration Agreement With Digital Mind Technology

Vancouver, British Columbia – September 29, 2021 – Blackhawk Growth Corp. (CSE:BLR; Frankfurt:0JJ) (the “Company” or “Blackhawk”) is pleased to announce that its subsidiary, MindBio Therapeutics, has signed an agreement with Digital Mind Technology Pty Ltd, (“Digital Mind”) a medical research and technology company developing evidence-based digital interventions to improve mental health and wellbeing. The agreement will see the two companies collaborate on product development and the commercialization of intellectual property.

Digital Mind’s foundational research and product development is creating new digital models to intervene in pain management experienced in cancer patients. Digital Mind’s platform and technology will provide unique opportunities to empower patients to adopt healthy self-care behavior for long-term wellbeing. Cancer survivorship brings unique challenges related to self-care and health services utilization. Digital interventions can address these challenges through personalized information tailored to individual needs and accessible at people’s own convenience via mobile devices.

Digital Mind was founded by Chief Scientist Dr. Lahiru Russell PhD. Dr. Russell’s vision is to empower people to engage in healthy self-care strategies to manage the impact of their illness for their long-term wellbeing.

Dr. Russell graduated with a Master in Biochemistry from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Russell has worked for a decade in the pharmaceutical industry managing clinical trials. Over the years, Dr. Russell developed an interest in the psychosocial adaptation to illness and strategies to manage stress-related aspects of diseases. Her studies in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (UK) stimulated her desire to undertake research in this field. Following this, Dr. Russell joined the psycho-oncology research team at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia, evaluating supportive care interventions for people affected by cancer.

“Digital Mind Technology will be a great platform to advance research and launch new digital mind-body therapies” said Dr. Lahiru Russell. “We aim to build a strong body of evidence around the beneficial impact of these therapies on the mental health of people with chronic conditions. Our collaboration with MindBio will transform the way people manage their health.”

Coupling her personal interest in mindfulness practices and her professional experience in psycho-oncology, Dr. Russell’s PhD research was designed to determine whether a mindfulness program could benefit people with melanoma. The focus of the program was to empower participants to manage their health by promoting awareness of emotions and teaching skills to manage distressing thoughts. Central to the success of the program was the flexibility offered to participants to access the information at their own convenience.

Executive Director of MindBio Therapeutics, Justin Hanka says: “MindBio is evolving into a multidisciplinary company involved in integrating research & clinical trials, clinics, technology and digital therapies. We are excited to have signed an agreement with Digital Mind Technology to expand MindBio’s footprint into technology and digital therapeutics that benefits people with mental health and chronic conditions.”

Blackhawk Growth’s MindBio Therapeutics Plans to Commercialize Intellectual Property Generated from the University of Auckland’s Clinical Trial in Psychedelic Assisted Therapy in Advanced Stage Cancer Patients

Blackhawk Growth’s MindBio Therapeutics Plans to Commercialize Intellectual Property Generated from the University of Auckland’s Clinical Trial in Psychedelic Assisted Therapy in Advanced Stage Cancer Patients

Vancouver, British Columbia – TheNewswire – September 16, 2021 – Blackhawk Growth Corp. (CSE:BLR); (CNSX:BLR.CN); (OTC:BLRZF); (Frankfurt:0JJ) (the “Company” or “Blackhawk”) is pleased to provide an update on MindBio Therapeutics Pty Ltd. (“MindBio Therapeutics”), a clinical stage drug development company conducting research into microdosing and medicinal use of psychedelic medicine.

MindBio Therapeutics plans to commercialize the intellectual property generated from the University of Auckland’s clinical trial in psychedelic assisted therapy in advanced-stage cancer patients. The administration of high-dose psychedelic compounds have shown clinically significant benefits in the treatment of psychological distress in advanced cancer patients. However, psychedelics at high doses can vividly alter perceptions; an experience that poses challenges in this vulnerable population. ‘Microdosing’ – repeated administration of psychedelics in low doses does not alter perceptions but may offer similar benefit in reducing anxiety, depression and existential distress. This study will evaluate the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial comparing psychedelic-microdose assisted in people who have advanced cancer and anxiety or depression.

Participants will be randomised to receive psychotherapy alongside doses of either an LSD microdose or placebo. The feasibility, acceptability, safety and potential psychological benefits of this intervention will be assessed. The findings will inform the development of a larger trial and provide initial indication of potential benefits of psychedelic microdosing in advanced cancer.

Mindset Pharma Selects Treatment-Resistant Depression and End of Life Cancer Angst as Indications for MSP-1014, its Novel Psilocybin-Inspired Clinical Candidate

Mindset Pharma Selects Treatment-Resistant Depression and End of Life Cancer Angst as Indications for MSP-1014, its Novel Psilocybin-Inspired Clinical Candidate

TORONTO, Sept. 09, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Mindset Pharma Inc. (CSE: MSET) (FSE: 9DF) (OTCQB: MSSTF) (“Mindset” or the “Company”), a drug discovery and development company focused on creating optimized and patentable next-generation psychedelic medicines to treat neurological and psychiatric disorders with unmet medical needs, today announced that it has selected Treatment-Resistant Depression (“TRD”) and End of Life Angst as initial target indications for its lead clinical candidate, MSP-1014. MSP-1014 is a novel patent-pending drug candidate that, based on preclinical data, shows potential to be a safer second generation psilocybin-like therapy with decreased potential for side effects.

“Psilocybin has demonstrated encouraging efficacy in treating TRD and End of Life Cancer Angst in a number of clinical studies and we believe our novel drug candidate, MSP-1014, represents a safer and more scalable evolution to its psilocybin predecessor,” said James Lanthier, CEO of Mindset. “TRD represents a large and untreated population with ⅓ of major depressive disorder sufferers resistant to presently available treatments1, while End of Life Angst is a major cause of depression and anxiety with limited treatment options. We see an opportunity to bridge a significant treatment gap with our next generation medicine and plan to advance MSP-1014, as well as other candidates across our library of patent-pending compounds, through the regulatory process as quickly as possible.”

“In a head-to-head comparison with psilocybin, MSP-1014 demonstrated superior head twitch response and minimal change in core body temperature, which suggests our compound potentially produces a greater hallucinogenic response with an improved safety profile,” stated Joseph Araujo, Chief Scientific Officer of Mindset. “Furthermore, MSP-1014 leverages Mindset’s proprietary psilocybin synthesis process, enabling scale-up efficiency in manufacturing and positioning us well for progressing our novel drug candidate through to clinical trials.”

Blackhawk Growth Subsidiary, MindBio Therapeutics, Accelerates Phase 1 & Phase 2 Microdosing Clinical Trials

Blackhawk Growth Subsidiary, MindBio Therapeutics, Accelerates Phase 1 & Phase 2 Microdosing Clinical Trials

Vancouver, British Columbia – TheNewswire – September 07, 2021 – Blackhawk Growth Corp. (CNSX:BLR.CN) (OTC:BLRZF) (Frankfurt:0JJ) (the “Company” or “Blackhawk”) is pleased to provide an update on its most recent investment, MindBio Therapeutics Pty Ltd. (“MindBio Therapeutics”), a clinical stage drug development company conducting research into microdosing and medicinal use of psychedelic medicines to treat a range of debilitating mental health conditions.

MindBio Therapeutics reports that in September 2021, 50% of the phase 1 safety trial in healthy patients will be completed and they will have collected complete safety data on the study participants.  Within the next 6 months, MindBio Therapeutics will complete the remainder of phase 1 trials microdosing LSD.

In the first clinical trial of its kind, participants are prescribed microdoses of LSD to take home in much the same way they would take any other over the counter medicine.  This unique clinical trial aims to demonstrate safety and efficacy of use of microdoses of psychedelic drugs for a medicinal purpose in a community setting.  It is expected that these “community” safety features demonstrated during the clinical trials will be used to support the commercial advancement of the medicines as they move through the regulatory and approvals process.

MindBio Therapeutics has numerous additional trials approved or planned.

  • —Phase 2 Clinical Trials have also just been approved with microdosing of LSD in late stage cancer patients.
  • —MindBio Therapeutics has also three phase 2 clinical trials in planning where microdoses of LSD will be tested against depression, chronic pain and mild cognitive impairment.

A recent peer review has shown that MindBio Therapeutics is one of very few publicly reported psychedelic companies involved in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials. MindBio Therapeutics is pioneering the development of micro-dose formulations and a range of technology and artificial intelligence applications to ensure the safe dosage, use and administration of psychedelic medicines in the community. Early indications show that LSD is tolerated well in micro-doses and has a lower side effect profile than the currently prescribed anti-depressant drugs.

Blackhawk Grants Incentive Stock Options and Restricted Shares Units

How to tell if a rat is tripping

Mindset Pharma Develops Highly Specialized Preclinical Rodent Trained Studies with Its Drugs to Differentiate Between Their Psychedelic and Non-Psychedelic Effects

Mindset Pharma (MSET) developed a new test that eliminates one of the biggest challenges of developing a new psychedelic drug.

It can difficult to determine whether or not animals perceive a psychedelic experience when testing a new drug, but human trials are much more expensive. Mindset’s test offers a new solution.

By training rats to discriminate psilocybin from saline, Mindset developed a test that allows rats to communicate whether or not they perceive a new drug to be similar to psilocybin, which will help the company select its lead compounds for human clinical trials.

The company also announced that its psilocybin-inspired compound, MSP-1014, will target treatment resistant depression and end of life cancer angst.

Fighting for the right to try psilocybin

Washington Officials Join Cancer Patients In Federal Court Argument Pushing DEA To Allow Psilocybin Access

Back in March, a Seattle doctor sued the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for rejecting an application to use psilocybin in end-of-life treatment for cancer patients.

Now, Washington Officials are supporting the case, since Washington is one of 41 states that’ve passed a “right-to-try” law, which gives terminally ill patients access to investigational medicine in Phase I of the FDA approval process.

“It is entirely consistent with the purpose and language of the state and federal right-to-try laws to include any controlled substances that have completed Phase 1 trials, including Schedule I controlled substances,” said Washington Deputy Solicitor General Peter B. Gonick.

Helping cancer patients in more way than one

Notice of Allowance Issued for Central Nervous System Peptide Technology

You probably know that psilocybin can help cancer patients with end-of-life anxiety, but it’s now being used to help with other side effects of cancer too.

Late stage cancer patients often experience a condition called cachexia, which causes loss of appetite, extreme weight loss and muscle wasting. AIkido Pharma Inc. (AIKI), a New York based company, is working to treat cancer cachexia with psilocybin. Psilocybin may be able to treat cachexia by reducing neuroinflammation in the brain and central nervous system tissues. AIkido Pharma was recently granted an exclusive sublicense to use homing peptide technology to deliver therapeutic agents to inflamed central nervous system tissue.
