Large survey suggests psilocybin is a “relatively safe” drug, with serious reactions being rare and short-lived

A survey of over 9,200 psilocybin mushroom users found that only 0.2% have sought emergency medical treatment following use.

The most common reported reasons for these adverse experiences were:

• Mixing substances
• Poor mindset
• Poor setting

Additionally, those in the emergency care-seeking group were significantly younger than the group that didn’t seek care, with a median age of 19 compared to 23.

Psilocybin use associated with lowered odds of having been arrested, study finds

People who use shrooms are less likely to commit crimes, according to new research.

An analysis of The National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that psilocybin use is linked to significantly reduced odds of arrest for:

• Larceny
• Burglary & robbery
• Simple assault & battery
• Serious violence
• DUI
• And other miscellaneous crimes

LSD appeared to have no impact on crime rates 🤔

Two thirds of physicians surveyed believe psilocybin therapy has potential benefit for patients with treatment-resistant depression

COMPASS Pathways plc (Nasdaq: CMPS), a mental health care company dedicated to accelerating patient access to evidence-based innovation in mental health, and Sermo, a global leader in physician insights, today announced findings from a survey of Sermo physician members that showed two thirds (66%) of doctors surveyed believe psilocybin therapy has potential therapeutic benefit for patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD).

More than 320 million people globally suffer with major depressive disorder (MDD)[i], the leading cause of disability worldwide and one of the fastest growing mental health illnesses[ii]. About a third of these patients – 100 million people – aren’t helped by existing therapies and suffer with TRD[iii].

Psilocybin therapy is an approach being investigated for the treatment of mental health challenges, including TRD. It combines the pharmacological effects of a synthesised version of psilocybin, a psychoactive substance that is an active ingredient in some species of mushrooms, with psychological support[iv].

The survey of 259 Sermo member physicians, sponsored by COMPASS, was conducted in November 2021 and completed by participants from the US, the UK, France, Italy, Denmark, Spain and the Netherlands. Doctors were asked their views on the future of psychiatric therapy and the potential role of psilocybin therapy.

Key survey findings:

• 66% of doctors surveyed believe psilocybin therapy has potential benefit for patients with TRD
• 50% would prescribe psilocybin therapy, if it was approved; 32% are undecided
• The greatest potential advantages to psilocybin treatment are believed to be: improved efficacy in treatment-resistant conditions (30%), rapid onset of action (26%), and different mechanism of action from existing therapies (19%)
• The greatest potential barriers to treatment were cited as: needing a dedicated space for six to eight hours (28%), lack of trained therapists in a new model of psychological support (21%), and office infrastructure (15%)
• Opinions on the optimal setting for psilocybin administration varied by region: 50% of European respondents said hospital; 42% of US respondents said specialised network of centres
• Physicians also noted the need to educate healthcare professionals on the potential benefits of psilocybin therapy and on how to incorporate the therapy into their practice, if approved

“Severe mental illnesses, such as treatment-resistant depression, have affected too many people in society for too long. Physicians are looking for new approaches to accelerate the healing process, particularly for patients for whom current therapies have failed,” said Murali Doraiswamy MBBS, FRCP, Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at Duke University School of Medicine, and an advisor to Sermo.

Survey methodology   

The survey was designed to assess attitudes towards the use of psilocybin therapy in general, in psychiatry. The survey was conducted online via Sermo’s RealTime platform and the random sample of physicians received compensation for their time and expertise. Survey limitations include sampling bias, inability to deduce causality from opinion polls, confounding variables not measured, and other factors.

Survey Finds Majority of Affected Americans Approve of Psychedelics as an Alternative Treatment to Address Anxiety, Depression and PTSD

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Jan. 11, 2021 – A new survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Delic Holdings Corp (“Delic” or the “Company”) (CSE: DELC) (OTCQB: DELCF) (FRA: 6X0) (Original Source), a leader in new medicines and treatments for a modern world, reports that nearly two thirds of Americans who suffer from anxiety/depression/PTSD (65%) believe that psychedelic medicine (i.e. ketamine, psilocybin and MDMA) should be made available to patients with treatment-resistant anxiety, depression or PTSD. 

According to the survey, conducted online in December, 2021 among 953 U.S. adults who suffer from anxiety/depression/PTSD, nearly two-thirds (63%) of Americans who have used prescription medications to treat anxiety/depression/PTSD say that while the medication helped, they still experienced residual feelings of anxiety, depression or PTSD. Furthermore, 18% say that the medication did not improve their condition/made it worse.

According to the study, 83% of Americans experiencing anxiety, depression or PTSD would be open to pursuing alternative treatments proven to be more effective than prescription medication with fewer side effects. Among those who suffer from anxiety/depression/PTSD, many would be open to using the following substances which have been identified as potential alternative treatments for those seeking to address their mental health conditions:

• Ketamine: 66% would be open to pursuing treatment using ketamine to treat anxiety, depression or PTSD if it was proven more effective than prescription medication with fewer side effects.
• Psilocybin: 62% said they would be open to pursuing treatment using psilocybin prescribed by a physician to address their anxiety, depression or PTSD if it was proven more effective than prescription medication with fewer side effects.
• MDMA: 56% would be open to pursuing treatment using MDMA prescribed by a physician to treat their anxiety, depression or PTSD if it was proven more effective than prescription medication with fewer side effects.

Survey Method

This survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of Delic from December 6 – 8, 2021 among 2,037 adults ages 18 and older, among whom 953 suffer from anxiety/depression/PTSD. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. Most Addiction Specialists Support Legalized Therapeutic Psychedelics

A recent survey revealed how psychedelic therapy is viewed by medical professionals in the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.

Of the 145 respondents:

• 64% believe that psychedelics show promise in treating substance use disorders
• 82% agree that the drugs show promise in treating psychiatric disorders like depression
• 75% were in favour of legalizing psychedelics for therapeutic uses

Interest is growing among patients too – the vast majority of specialist said they had discussed psychedelic experiences with at least one patient.

A survey shows that parents, especially those who have experienced mental illness, are very open to ketamine therapy for children. The average acceptance score was 7/10 and over 60% said they would allow their child to try ketamine therapy to treat depression.

After Cannabis, Maltese People Want To Legalise Mushrooms Next

Malta may legalize cannabis, but residents don’t want the reforms to stop there.

In a recent survey, 447 people in Malta were asked if they think the country should legalize any other substances beyond cannabis. Magic mushrooms was the most popular response with 45% in favour of its legalization.

LSD was the next most common response at 27%, but 56% did not see a need for any other drugs to be legalized.
