Psyence is advancing the extraordinary therapeutic potential of natural psilocybin. We are doing this because we believe that natural psilocybin offers multiple benefits for the long-term treatment of mental health conditions that may result from trauma. Plant-based and natural remedies are our preferred route as conscious consumers increasingly seek more natural treatments when it comes to supporting their mental wellbeing.
Across the globe research institutions are exploring the potential of psilocybin for therapeutic use, and to treat a variety of mental health conditions. Psilocybin, the psychoactive component of magic mushroom, has shown to have long-lasting medical and spiritual benefits, in comparison to other psychedelic drugs.
Further, what makes psilocybin-based treatments appealing is their rapid and sustained effect. Psilocybin is also reported to have fewer unpleasant side effects than those often associated with more widely prescribed traditional SSRI antidepressants.
According to John Hopkins neuropharmacologist Roland Griffiths who leads the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins Medicine, what makes psilocybin different to other mood-altering pharmaceuticals it is “the enduring meaning and belief changes that can occur. People feel ‘reorganized’ in a way they don’t with other drugs…it’s almost like reprogramming the operating system of a computer.” Griffiths was the lead author of a 2006 study, which demonstrated Psilocybin’s helpfulness for treating a variety of mental health disorders, as well as a more recent study on depression.
At our federally licensed facility in Lesotho we are extracting psilocybin from dried mushrooms for use for research and development purposes at research centres and universities. By extracting from mushrooms we are able to extract the other component alkaloids; which we believe provides an entourage effect, which potentially boosts the benefit of the psilocybin. Psilocybin mushrooms contain a variety of alkaloids, including psilocin, norpsilocin and in some cases may have baeocystin, norbaeocystin and aeruginascin.
Psyence believes in the power of nature and is excited about the positive impact psilocybin based-therapies may offer for those suffering from mental health conditions, often a result of trauma.
