MAPS receives Innovation Passport for MDMA therapy 🎉

MAPS is Granted Innovation Passport in United Kingdom for MDMA as an Adjunct to Therapy for PTSD

The Innovation Passport will make MDMA therapy for PTSD widely available in the UK, as rapidly as possible!

The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) found that 88% of patients had a reduction in PTSD symptoms after three MDMA sessions in conjunction with trauma-focused therapy.

The organization was granted an Innovation Passport for the treatment – a UK designation that speeds up the timeline for approval of innovative medicines for life-threatening conditions (similar to Breakthrough Therapy Designations in the US, which the treatment received in 2017).

Awakn Life Sciences Signs MOU With MAPS

Awakn Life Sciences Signs MOU With MAPS

Agreement to explore a partnership for MDMA-Assisted Therapy for treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder in Europe

TORONTO, CANADA, 19 January 2022 – Awakn Life Sciences Corp. (NEO: AWKN) (OTCQB: AWKNF) (FSE: 954) (‘Awakn’), a biotechnology company developing and delivering psychedelic therapeutics (medicines and therapies) to treat Addiction, announced today it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) with the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) to explore a partnership to utilize MDMA-assisted therapy to treat Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) in Europe.

Under the terms of this MOU, Awakn will explore a data licensing agreement with MAPS to support Awakn’s Phase IIb and planned Phase III studies for MDMA-assisted therapy for AUD in Europe. Awakn and MAPS will also assess a partnership to secure marketing authorisation/regulatory approval for the ethical commercialization of MDMA-assisted therapy for the treatment of AUD in Europe.

AUD is a chronic disease affecting 40 million people in Europe and 390 million people globally. It is also a pervasive and persistent public health issue, with alcohol use being one of the top five causes of disease and disability in the majority of countries in Europe. And for each person suffering from AUD, there is a friend, a partner, or a family also deeply affected by it.

In February 2021, Awakn announced the publication of the successful results of the BIMA Phase IIa study investigating MDMA-assisted therapy for the treatment of AUD, reporting a 21% relapse rate at 9 months in comparison to a 75% relapse rate in a separate observational group.

In May 2021, MAPS announced that it achieved successful results in its first of two Phase III trials for MDMA-assisted therapy for the treatment of severe chronic PTSD. In this study, 88% of participants who received three MDMA-assisted therapy sessions – along with twelve 90-minute, non-drug preparation and integration therapy sessions – experienced a clinically meaningful reduction in symptoms. 67% of participants no longer qualified for a PTSD diagnosis.

“MAPS’ role in driving and advancing the use of psychedelics in the clinical setting over the last 35 years is second to none,” said Anthony Tennyson, Awakn’s CEO. “We believe that by licensing MAPS’ pre-clinical data and exploring options for future ethical commercialisation, we will improve the timeline and path to market for these life-changing treatments for AUD, providing hope for those for whom the status quo is not working.”

“MAPS has been working with AWAKN scientists for decades in the effort to initiate trials into a range of clinical uses of MDMA-assisted therapy,” shares Rick Doblin, Founder and Executive Director of MAPS. “We’re delighted to be entering into this MoU with AWAKN which holds great promise for people suffering from AUD.”

Awakn also recently announced groundbreaking results from its Phase IIa/b ‘Ketamine for the Reduction of Alcoholic Relapse’ (KARE) clinical trial. It was the first controlled study in the world to investigate Ketamine-assisted therapy for the treatment of AUD and was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry in January. The study, conducted by the University of Exeter (UoE) and led by Prof. Celia Morgan, Professor of Psychopharmacology at UoE and Awakn’s Head of Ketamine-Assisted Therapy for addiction showed that ketamine and psychological therapy resulted in an 86% abstinence rate 6 months post treatment, an increase from 2% before the trial.

“This is another milestone in the advancement of successfully treating Alcohol Use Disorder,” said Awakn CMO Dr. Ben Sessa. “Currently there are millions suffering with very few promising lasting treatments and be it with MDMA or Ketamine-Assisted Therapy, we are exploring every promising avenue to treat a disease that not only impacts the individual, but also families and communities.”

NOTE

The safety and efficacy of MDMA-assisted therapy is currently under investigation. It has not yet been approved by medical regulators, does not work for everyone, and carries risks even in therapeutic settings. These statements are no guarantee of future regulatory approval or availability of MDMA-assisted therapy. These statements necessarily involve known and unknown risks and uncertainties, which may cause actual outcomes to differ materially from our projections.

Why psychedelics could be the key to world peace

Psychedelics: The newest tool in nuclear negotiations?

This scientist claims she helped end the Cold War with MDMA.

Carol Rosin—a space and missile defense consultant for the US—said she gave MDMA to Soviet scientists and military personnel prior to nuclear negotiations in 1985 (before the drug was illegal).

The plan was created with help from Rick Doblin, the founder of MAPS.

“The thought was that if they can work through their fears and traumas and feel their connection to humanity, then that might be helpful,” Doblin explains.

While some are skeptical if this actually happened, MDMA releases oxytocin (aka the hormone of love and empathy), which could certainly help the opposing sides see eye to eye!

Numinus to Host Extension of MAPS-Sponsored MDMA-Assisted Therapy for PTSD Trials

Numinus to Host Extension of MAPS-Sponsored MDMA-Assisted Therapy for PTSD Trials

Numinus will manage two new clinics in Montreal and Vancouver to host trials.

VANCOUVER, BC, Nov. 10, 2021 /CNW/ – Numinus Wellness Inc. (“Numinus” or the “Company”) (TSXV: NUMI), a leader in psychedelics-focused mental healthcare, is pleased to announce that it has secured two new Canadian psychedelic clinics that will host the Canadian sites of the MAPS Public Benefit Corporation (MAPS PBC) study “A multi-site open-label extension study of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD (MAPPUSX).”

In addition to managing the two new clinics, which are fully compliant with Health Canada regulations and ready to provide MDMA-assisted therapy as part of the trial, Numinus will host the Montreal and Vancouver sites in MAPPUSX, which will continue to study the safety and efficacy of MDMA in treating severe PTSD, under the leadership of MAPS PBC as study organizer. Numinus will also financially support costs relating to therapists who deliver the therapeutic intervention in Numinus clinics during the trial.

“We are honored to host the Canadian sites of the MAPPUSX trial as we continue to examine the important findings around MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD,” said Dr. Joe Flanders, VP, Psychology, Numinus and therapist for the Montreal site of the trial. “Our clinical and research teams are well positioned to implement MAPS’ research and, ultimately, to work with MAPS on the translation of research findings into mainstream clinical practice. We are excited about this study in both BC and Quebec and look forward to how the MAPPUSX study supports expanded collaboration in the future.”

To date, 25 Numinus-affiliated therapists have gone through MAPS’ training program for delivery of MDMA-assisted therapy and a number of these therapists will have roles in the trial. The trial will be open to eligible participants who were previously enrolled in the placebo arm of the parent study (MAPP1) or who were not able to receive treatment due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“We are happy to work with a trusted ally to quickly complete the extension trial at the Canadian sites” said Rick Doblin, Ph.D. the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). “As we get closer to our goal of making MDMA-assisted therapy a reality, it is critical that we work with clinics who will advance making this treatment widely accessible in real-world settings.”

To accomplish this next step in the MAPPUSX study, Numinus has assumed the leases of two new clinics, the Vancouver and Montreal psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy clinics that were previously used to conduct MAPS PBC’s earlier study “A multi-site phase 3 study of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD (MAPP1).” In that trial, 88% of participants experienced a clinically meaningful reduction in symptoms and 67% no longer qualified for a PTSD diagnosis. The highly statistically significant results and excellent safety record suggest MDMA-assisted therapy will be an effective treatment for severe, chronic PTSD

Payton Nyquvest, CEO, Numinus, added, “We are thrilled that our two new locations, which are purpose-developed for psychedelic-assisted therapy, regulatorily compliant and leading in industry standards, can be used to help advance this crucial work on psychedelic medicine. We look forward to deepening our collaboration with MAPS while expanding the resources and solutions available to those suffering from PTSD.”

Securing the Canadian sites will further allow Numinus to expand its clinical activities in Quebec and BC, including its ketamine-assisted psychotherapy program, which is available in both provinces.

NOTE
The safety and efficacy of MDMA-assisted therapy is currently under investigation. It has not yet been approved by Health Canada or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), does not work for everyone, and carries risks even in therapeutic settings. These statements are no guarantee of future Health Canada or FDA approval or availability of MDMA-assisted therapy. These statements necessarily involve known and unknown risks and uncertainties, which may cause actual outcomes to differ materially from projections.

MAPS to Investigate Viability of Research Pathway for MDMA-Assisted Therapy to Treat Traumatic Brain Injury

Effort Positions MAPS, Sponsor of the Only Completed Phase 3 Trial for Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy, to Serve New Unique Role Within

CHICAGO, Sept. 14, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Wesana Health Holdings Inc.  (“Wesana” or the “Company”) (CSE: WESA; OTCQB: WSNAF), an emerging data-driven life sciences company focused on developing innovative approaches for better understanding, protecting and improving neurological health and performance, including through the advancement of psychedelic medicines, announced its commitment to fund an initial US $1.5 million to assess the viability of Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) MDMA-assisted therapy to treat traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Under the terms of the recently signed memorandum of understanding, Wesana’s financial commitment will enable MAPS Public Benefit Corporation (MAPS PBC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), to activate a team to evaluate the scope of unmet need for TBI treatment and help to define terms of a desired joint venture between MAPS and Wesana. Use of funds will include, in part, legal support in drafting and finalizing a partnership agreement, business development and executive staff costs in evaluating viability of the treatment, and other research-related expenses including establishing ethical guidelines governing the desired agreement.

MAPS’ research has primarily focused on MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD, with the first of two Phase 3 trials demonstrating a clinically significant reduction in PTSD symptoms for 88% of participants. Similar to PTSD, TBI can have profound, diverse, and life-long impacts on a person’s physical and mental health. Lingering visible and invisible challenges interfere with work, education, and relationships, with disproportionate impacts for people of color. While leading front-line treatments are considered effective for some individuals or types of injury, more than 6.2 million Americans are estimated to have chronic TBI-related disabilities and millions more live with milder, yet disruptive, symptoms. Nearly 414,000 Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans had a TBI and for many, long-term negative health outcomes are poorly understood.

“Wesana is a serious, thoughtful and ethical company engaged in the development of psychedelic-assisted therapy. What Daniel and his team are doing is in line with MAPS’ ethics, mission, values and scientific rigor, and we believe together, MAPS and Wesana can bring much needed help to the massively underserved TBI population. Data collected from MAPS-sponsored Phase 3 clinical trials suggests that MDMA-assisted therapy appears promising in the treatment of TBI. Consistent with our mission, we seek to investigate treatments for affected patients who can be helped by MDMA – this is an important step in that direction” said MAPS Executive Director Rick Doblin, Ph.D.

Daniel Carcillo, CEO of Wesana Health added “The work MAPS has done for more than 35 years with regulators and clinical researchers to navigate the rigorous and necessary FDA approval process for MDMA therapeutic use has positioned psychedelic-assisted therapy on the precipice of national – and global – acceptance. The millions of people afflicted with PTSD may soon have access to MDMA therapy, and we believe the millions suffering from TBI may experience similar relief in the future.”

This first-of-its-kind research collaboration between MAPS and Wesana will accelerate MAPS PBC’s research timelines and provide additional support for further research, advocacy, education, and equitable access to MDMA-assisted therapy treatments. Under the terms of the relationship, Wesana is expected to:

  • Gain expertise and information to design psychedelic-assisted therapy programs for TBI and improve the Wesana timeline and path to market for its treatments
  • Explore obtaining an exclusive commercial license to use MDMA for the treatment of TBI
  • Evaluate the viability of revenue share agreements between the organizations
  • Adapt MAPS’ equitable access research projects to develop a meaningful patient access program
  • Fund associated research, administered by MAPS PBC, with additional capital

Carcillo continued, “Success in forming a research collaboration with MAPS is expected to shrink Wesana Health’s time to market for MDMA therapy for TBI to a handful of years. With millions of people around the world experiencing injuries impacting their brain health, our hope is that through this partnership we will soon deliver meaningful help to the victims, families, friends and communities affected by TBI.”

Note
The safety and efficacy of MDMA-assisted therapy is currently under investigation. It has not yet been approved by the FDA, does not work for everyone, and carries risks even in therapeutic settings. These statements are no guarantee of future FDA approval or availability of MDMA-assisted therapy. These statements necessarily involve known and unknown risks and uncertainties, which may cause actual outcomes to differ materially from our projections.

The formation of a long-term partnership between Wesana and MAPs remains subject to, among other things, negotiation and execution of definitive documentation and satisfaction of the conditions precedent negotiated therein. There is no assurance that any such definitive documentation will be settled and entered into by the parties nor that any such conditions precedent will be met.

About Wesana
Wesana is an emerging life sciences company championing the development and delivery of psychedelic and naturally-sourced therapies to treat traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other neurological conditions. Through extensive clinical research and academic partnerships, Wesana is developing evidence-based formulations and protocols that empower patients to overcome neurological, psychological and mental health ailments caused by trauma.

No more excuses for Health Canada

B.C. non-profit challenges Health Canada to end 50-year prohibition on magic mushrooms

Several non-profits are doing Health Canada’s dirty work to speed up the legalization of psilocybin.

TheraPsil sent 165 pages of proposed psilocybin regulations to Health Canada, which were based on the medicinal cannabis regulations created 20 years ago. The document addresses regulations around selling and growing magic mushrooms, such as how to qualify for a license, quality control processes, security measures, and packaging requirements.

Other non-profits including the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) and the Canadian Psychedelic Association (CPA) are drafting their own legal frameworks.

“This will hopefully be a gift to them to have done their work for them,” said a CPA board member.
“All they have to do is agree, but of course, it’s never that simple. The bureaucrats will have to go over it with a fine tooth comb,” said a former federal treaty negotiator and psilocybin exemption applicant.
